A Summer Full of Learning, Discovery, and Fun

Summer should be a time for kids to have fun—but that doesn't mean learning has to stop.

This summer, approximately 50 students from communities across the Oklahoma City metro area—including Edmond, Piedmont, Midwest City, Oklahoma City, and Norman—joined Freedom City's Summer Learning Program. For the first time, the program reached capacity, filling every available spot with students ready to learn, explore, and make memories together.

Our Summer Learning Program is designed to help students stay engaged academically throughout the summer and maintain the skills they developed during the school year. Each day gave students opportunities to practice reading, math, and other academic skills while also participating in hands-on activities connected to a weekly theme.

Learning Around a Theme

Each week brought a new theme that gave students a fun way to explore different subjects and connect what they were learning to the world around them.

Students explored themes including:

😊 Emotions & Senses

Students explored their emotions and senses through activities that encouraged them to understand how they feel and experience the world around them.

🧠 Body Parts

Students explored the human body and learned more about how different body parts work together.

🌿 Seasons & Nature

Students discovered the changing seasons and explored the natural world through hands-on activities and learning.

🐾 Animals

Students learned about animals and the unique characteristics that make each one special.

🍎 Nutrition

Students learned about food groups and healthy choices while building connections between what they

Students explored different sports while learning about teamwork, movement, and healthy activity.

🎨 Colors

Students discovered and explored colors through activities that encouraged observation, creativity, and participation.

👩‍🚀 Careers

Students discovered different careers and explored the many possibilities for their future.

These themes gave students a reason to be curious while creating opportunities to learn beyond a traditional classroom setting.

Keeping Skills Sharp

Academic learning remained part of every student's day.

Many schools send students home with summer learning packets to complete over the break. At Freedom City, students worked on these assignments every day. For students who did not receive a summer packet from their school, we created one for them so they could continue practicing important academic skills throughout the summer.

This daily practice helps students stay connected to learning during the months away from school and return to the classroom ready to build on what they already know.

More Than a Summer Program

Of course, summer wasn't all worksheets and learning activities.

Students also had opportunities to laugh, play, make friends, explore new interests, and simply enjoy being kids. The combination of academic practice and hands-on experiences created a summer where learning continued—but so did the fun.

Reaching capacity this year was an exciting milestone for Freedom City. It showed us that families across the Oklahoma City metro area are looking for opportunities that keep their children learning, engaged, and connected throughout the summer.

We're grateful to every family who trusted us with their children this summer and to the staff, volunteers, and supporters who helped make these weeks possible.

At Freedom City, we believe learning doesn't have to stop when the school year ends.
